Bramble and Burdock is run by my husband, Matthew, and myself (Hi! I’m Melody). We are now homesteading on a small three-ish acres in Upstate New York, where we live with our three kiddos, dog, cat, lots and lots of bees, and some chickens and geese. We also raised some turkeys this year for the first time! It has been a lot of fun so far, and we hope you’ll join us for the journey forward. There is so much to learn, grow, and do on a small homestead, and we hope our journey will help yours maybe be just a little easier.
When we bought this place we had absolutely no intention of homesteading. But then my husband decided he wanted to start a garden. I went along for the ride, but wasn’t into it at first. I am so glad that he pushed for having a garden and growing some of our own food! If he hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have learned that I love to garden or the satisfaction you get when you take something out of your garden and can preserve it for the winter! There isn’t anything quite like it!
After we started a garden, my husband (again!) decided to try beekeeping. It was a major hit! Not only with him, but the kids loved his new hobby too. It came with fun stuff like getting comb honey out of the hive and painting. Two things our kids love. Beekeeping has been a source of joy, learning, and discovery on our little homestead. And while it has its ups and downs, will definitely be a part of our little family’s lives for years to come.
It took us a while, but we eventually got around to the “gateway animal”. Can you guess what it is? Yup! The chicken. Almost any homesteader you come across will tell you that chickens are the gateway animal. Once you get into having and taking care of chickens, most people go on to expand what they do on their homestead. They are so much fun!
Going forward, we will continue to learn and grow in subject matters such as gardening, beekeeping, food preservation, chicken care, and some home crafts such as soap making, and, maybe, some basket and candle making.
So please join us, and let us know what you would like to learn more about! We’d love to have you!
